New Primary Maths Curriculum

There are exciting times ahead for the teaching and learning in Tullyallen! The  Department of Education has published a new maths curriculum for children in primary and special schools. The curriculum sets out what children will learn in maths in every school and will be rolled out in the school year 2024/25.

The aim of the new curriculum is that children see maths as important and useful to their everyday lives. It does not change much of ‘what’ children learn, but it improves ‘how’ children learn maths. This includes more learning through play and problem solving. It also provides more opportunities for children to be creative, take risks and be challenged.

This is a welcomed hands-on approach to Maths which has the following benefits:
Enhanced Understanding: Through hands-on learning, students are able to see, touch, and manipulate objects, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
Increased Engagement: It is more engaging and enjoyable for students to learn maths by incorporating familiar objects into their lessons. This encourages a positive attitude toward maths learning.
Real-World Application: By connecting maths to everyday objects, students can better grasp the practical applications of mathematical principles in their daily lives.
Multisensory Learning: Hands-on activities engage multiple senses, catering to different learning styles and promoting a more holistic learning experience.
